Review of Mailbird

Mailbird provides a solid and productive email experience for all of your accounts. While Mailbird can be extended with “apps,” these rarely work well together, and email handling itself can feel basic.

Postponing Emails

If you can’t or don’t want to respond right now, snoozing emails is simple (later today, next week, etc.). If Mailbird is running, it will return the snoozed email to the top of the inbox. If not, the email will reappear when you open it. All delayed emails are stored in a Snoozed folder, accessible via IMAP.

Productive Simplicity

Email management involves reading, replying, and occasionally writing. It often means repeatedly deleting and archiving. Quick actions are abundant in Mailbird. Of course, you can open an email and use its toolbar, or use a shortcut. You can also click on the message to open a toolbar. On a touchscreen, swipe to delete and archive.

You can either use the quick reply pane above the current message or a full compose window.

Email Services and Account Support

Mailbird’s IMAP accounts work as expected with folders and other features. Mailbird will try to connect to your service of choice, such as iCloud Mail, Outlook.com, AOL, or OAUTH 2 for Gmail.

Mailbird lets you set up as many identities as you want with any account. You can choose to send through the main account’s SMTP server or one associated with the address (to avoid delivery problems). Yes, Mailbird fully encrypts email data sent to and received from the server.

Mailbird also supports POP, which allows you to download new messages and manage folders locally (on your computer).

Mailbird then collects all messages from your accounts’ inboxes in a merged inbox, sent mail in a common Sent folder, etc. Individual account access is quick and easy with custom account icons.

Mailbird Email Folders

For example, when you set up an account, Mailbird will create folders for archiving, drafts, sent mail, etc., but you can also access any custom folders for IMAP accounts.

Other than for archiving, folders are used like labels: Copying is the default action, and folders can be colored for quick identification (and with messages themselves, where folders appear as tags).

You can also move messages, but it takes a few more clicks. If you use the keyboard, press V to quickly search folder names when moving or copying.

Email Signatures

Each address you set up for sending can have its own signature in Mailbird. Using the same signature for multiple addresses requires copying and pasting, so adding more signatures or picking when sending is out. You can use HTML and rich-text editing to create the look you want.

Extending Mailbird with Apps

Services and applications such as Google Calendar, Sunrise, Todoist, Moo.do, WhatsApp, and Veeting Rooms are all claimed to be extensible with Mailbird.

Sadly, most of these apps are web services running inside Mailbird. Minimal or no integration You can drag emails to Moo.do and photos to WhatsApp, but that’s it.

Composing Messages in Mailbird

Except for HTML source editing, Mailbird’s message editor is rich in features. When replying, Mailbird lets you write over the original email, but you can also insert comments and answers inline into the quoted text; Mailbird then sets your reply blocks apart with a color and your name.

Mailbird lets you attach files from your computer when sending them. However, Dropbox integration allows you to easily insert links to documents stored online.

Search and More Help

Mailbird’s search function finds emails quickly and efficiently. Thoughts on more search and sorting options?

Mailbird also doesn’t suggest search terms or recipients. Mailbird lacks features like reply suggestions and snippets, and you can’t create email templates.

No labels or folders are suggested, and no key messages are identified. Mailbird is best used with an IMAP email account that does these things (and proper spam filtering) on the server.

Mailbird Gmail Hacks

A delivery delay lets you undo a sending mistake. But Mailbird can’t schedule or recur emails.

Mailbird can pick just the text from any email and flash it before your eyes word by word. More effective is the option to automatically zoom emails to a legible size.
