Long-tail keywords usually have lower search volume. However, they have an enormous search volume as a group. This name is coined from the ‘long tail’ of the ‘search demand curve’. It is a graph depicting keywords by their search volume. 

If you do keyword research in Ahrefs’ Keywords Explorer, for example, if you look at the topic of cute cats and a few long-tail variations, the first keyword would be at the top of the curve due to its popularity, the cutest cat in the world would be a long tail keyword somewhere further down, and the other two phrases would be at the tail due to being unpopular ways to search for the topic. Even still, a large number of permutations would almost certainly result in a significant search volume.

Long-tail keywords are thus characterized by search volume rather than by the length or number of words in the actual keywords. Long-tail keywords, on the other hand, are typically longer since more words express a more particular question.

 

Every topic has a search demand curve, and they fall into two distinct buckets. 

Bucket #1 

So topics that fall into bucket #1 are usually broad and have a very long tail with many relevant phrases. Looking at the top 10 ranking pages in Keywords Explorer for the query, “hairstyles,” you’ll see that most of these pages rank for thousands or tens of thousands of different relevant keywords. 

Bucket #2

These are often considerably more narrowly focused themes with fewer long-tail keywords. As an example, if you look at the SERP for “squeeze page,” you’ll notice that there are far fewer keyword ranks because the topic is so narrow. 

Now, these two types of long-tail keywords are pretty different, and you must treat them differently, too. 

Effective Tips : 

For starters, if you rank well for this “head keyword,” you’ll almost always rank well for the thousands of other long-tail searches as well. So when you pick your topics, always look to the ones with the most considerable total search traffic potential. And number two is equally important. If Google “merges” a long tail keyword into a more prominent topic, then there’s no point in targeting It.

We already know that one broad article will rank for thousands of search queries on Google. So by trying to publish dedicated articles that target a single long-tail keyword within the general topic, you’ll achieve nothing but wasted time.These so-called ‘topical long-tail keywords’ are great for new websites or those that haven’t entirely built an authoritative backlink profile yet. There are fewer websites targeting long-tail keywords. It makes it easier for SEO companies to achieve higher SERP rankings for them. And as your site builds a solid backlink profile, you can start branching off to the high volume search terms. 96.54% of all search queries in the US have less than 50 searches per month.

So by neglecting these long-tail keyword phrases, you’re missing out on the majority of searches that happen every day. But now you have a perfect understanding of the two types of long-tail keywords, those that belong to a broader topic and those that form a matter of their own.
